Fluxes and Transformations of Nitrogen in a High-Elevation Catchment, Sierra Nevada Author(s):

چکیده
The fluxes and transformations of nitrogen (N) were investigated from 1985 through 1987 at the Emerald Lake watershed (ELW), a 120 ha high-elevation catchment located in the southern Sierra Nevada, California, USA. Up to 90% of annual wet deposition of N was stored in the seasonal snowpack; NO3 and NH+ were released from storage in the form of an ionic pulse, where the first fraction of meltwater draining from the snowpack had concentrations of NO3 and NH4+ as high as 28 peq L-] compared to bulk concentrations of <5 /eq L-1 in the snowpack. The soil reservoir of organic N (81 keq ha-') was about ten times the N storage in litter and biomass (12 keq ha-'). Assimilation of N by vegetation was balanced by the release of N from soil mineralization, nitrification, and litter decay. Mineralization and nitrification processes produced 1.1 keq ha-' yr-1 of inorganic N, about 3 times the loading of N from wet and dry deposition. Less than 1% of the NHI+ in wet and dry deposition was exported from the basin as NH+. Biological assimilation was primarily responsible for retention of NH+ in the basin, releasing one mode of H+ for every mole of NH+ retained and neutralizing about 25% of the annual acid neutralizing capacity produced by mineral weathering in the basin. Nitrate concentrations in stream waters reached an annual peak during the first part of snowmelt runoff, with maximum concentrations in stream water of 20 /eq L-', more than 4 times the volume-weighted mean annual concentrations of NO3 in wet deposition. This annual peak in stream water NO3 was consistent with the release of NO3 from the snowpack in the form of an ionic pulse; however soil processes occurring underneath the winter snowpack were another potential source of this NO3. Concentrations of stream water NO3 during the summer growing season were always near or below detection limits (0.5 /eq L-~).

Snowmelt Runoff and Water Yield along Elevation and Temperature Gradients in California’s Southern Sierra Nevada
Differences in hydrologic response across the rain-snow transition in the southern Sierra Nevada were studied in eight headwater catchments – the Kings River Experimental Watersheds – using continuous precipitation, snowpack, and streamflow measurements. The annual runoff ratio (discharge divided by precipitation) increased about 0.1 per 300 m of mean catchment elevation over the range 1,800-2,...
متن کاملReducing the impact of summer cattle grazing on water quality in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California: a proposal.
The Sierra Nevada Mountain range serves as an important source of drinking water for the State of California. However, summer cattle grazing on federal lands affects the overall water quality yield from this essential watershed as cattle manure is washed into the lakes and streams or directly deposited into these bodies of water. This organic pollution introduces harmful microorganisms and also...
متن کاملApplication of thermal-dissociation laser induced fluorescence (TD-LIF) to measurement of HNO3, 6alkyl nitrates, 6peroxy nitrates, and NO2 fluxes using eddy covariance
Nitrogen exchange between the atmosphere and biosphere directly influences atmospheric composition. While much is known about mechanisms of NO and N2O emissions, instrumentation for the study of mechanisms contributing to exchange of other major nitrogen species is quite limited. Here we describe the application of a new technique, thermal dissociation-laser induced fluorescence (TD-LIF), to ed...

متن کاملTopographic Evolution of the Sierra Nevada Measured Directly by Inversion of Low-temperature Thermochronology
At present, there are at least two competing ideas for the topographic evolution of the Sierra Nevada. One idea is that the Sierra Nevada was formed as a monocline in the Cretaceous, marking the transition from the Great Valley forearc basin to the west, and a high Nevadaplano plateau to the east, similar to the west flank of the modern Altiplano of the Andes. Both the thermochronologic imprint...
